SAP has laid off employees based in the Pacific Northwest as part of what the tech giant describes as a “restructuring program” related to its product engineering organization that includes more than 6,000 workers.

A company spokesperson confirmed the cuts, which impact fewer than 30 people based in the Pacific Northwest.

SAP planted its flag in the Seattle region following its $8.3 billion acquisition of travel expense software maker Concur in 2014.

“SAP is always focused on adapting to market and customer needs,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “As part of this ongoing transformation, SAP recently analyzed the structure of the product engineering organization to invest in key growth areas. The organization continues to grow and hire, aligned with the needs of our customers as they transform their businesses. Ultimately, a small number of employees were impacted under the restructuring program, with fewer than 30 of them located in the Pacific Northwest.”

Companies big and small — from publicly traded giants such as SAP to smaller startups — are cutting staff or freezing hiring plans as leaders look to trim expenses amid an uncertain economy and fears of a recession.
