Teachers do so much in a day. And so much of it goes unnoticed or unappreciated by those who don’t understand what our jobs are really like. Recently, teacher Katie Peters took to TikTok to share just some of the things she did in a single day, from comforting a student after a break up to giving another cash for a haircut.

It’s a list most teachers will find relatable—and it doesn’t stop after the bell rings or contract hours are over either. Take a look:

Finding safe housing, ensuring students have food to eat, and being supportive through heartbreak are all in a day’s work. Even after the school day ends, work continues with meetings, recommendation letters, and planning engaging lessons.

It’s long past time people really understood all the work teachers do.

And we’re thankful for teachers like Peters for getting the conversation started.

We’d love to hear your stories, too. What are the things you do that most people don’t realize? How much work do you do #afterthebellrings? Tell us your #afterthebellrings story by tagging us on Instagram or Twitter at @weareteachers.

Teachers aren’t looking for a pat on the back or a “good job.” We need grace, understanding, and more money and support to navigate one of the most complex, demanding jobs out there.
